The traditional health system model is in the midst of a significant transformation marked by a shift from hospital-centric care to a more decentralized, patient-centric future of health care. The corresponding changes in consumer needs and expectations, and the growing financial pressures faced by health systems operating under the old model, make it imperative that health systems identify alternatives to their traditional hospital-centric models, or else risk being overtaken by new competitors looking to supplant the role that health systems have historically played in managing care. One promising alternative gaining traction is the resurgence of provider-sponsored health plans (PSHPs) and their potential to serve as a framework upon which the new patient-centered ecosystem can grow.
