Hospital visitation policies have evolved over the years in response to changes in medicine, social customs, and patient/family demands. Hospital are now required by The Joint Commission and the new Medicare Conditions of Participation to explain to all patients their right to choose who may visit them during an inpatient stay regardless of whether the visitor is a family member, spouse, domestic partner, or another type of visitor. Hospitals must now give deference to the patient’s wishes concerning their representatives. This resource, co-published with The Human Rights Campaign, will assist hospitals in revising their visitation policies to satisfy these new requirements and to ensure patients and their representatives are best positioned to make health care decisions.

The following audiences may find this resource helpful:

  • Medical center/hospital executives and administrators
  • In-house counsel for medical centers and hospitals

  • Hospital case managers, social workers, and clergy
