Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), formerly the Health Care Financing Administration, is a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that administers Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. See http://www.cms.hhs.gov/.

CMS’ Office of E-Health Standards and Services also enforces the Transactions and Code Sets and National Identifiers (Employer and Provider identifiers) regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

CMS is headquartered in Baltimore, MD, and is headed by the CMS Administrator. The agency is organized into the following centers: Center for Medicare; Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services; Center for Strategic Planning; Center for Program Integrity; Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation; and the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation and the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight both were outgrowths of the Affordable Care Act of 2010.

CMS also operates ten regional offices in New York, Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver, San Francisco and Seattle, which since February 2007 were reorganized to correspond to CMS’ main business lines (Medicare Health Plans Operations, Financial Management and Fee For Service Operations, Medicaid and Children's Health Operations, and Quality Improvement and Survey & Certification Operations).
