Tax Issues for Health Care Organizations

This program narrows in on IRS regulations, exemption standards, and enforcement initiatives, key tax issues and laws on state and federal exchanges, and the ACA and tax issues. Additionally attendees will learn about practicing before IRS Exempt Organizations and implications of EO reorganization. Whether you are a generalist who needs to know tax issues or a certified tax expert, you will not want to miss the Tax Issues for Health Care Organizations program!

The program will kick-off on Wednesday evening with the Tax Primer for those needing to understand the basics or get a refresher prior to attending the rest of the program. The plenary session on Thursday will open with two separate discussions - one will cover Federal Tax Reform and Health Care Reform, and the second will address The Rising Tide of 501(r) Exam Activity: Is Your Hospital Prepared? Friday's plenary session will include Legal Ethics: Reporting Illegal Acts to Boards–Attorneys and Auditors Ethical Duties, followed by When Good Deals Go Bad–How to Repeal or Replace an EBT. Some of the in-depth breakout sessions included are:

  • The New Partnership Tax Audit Regime Effective 2018: Update on the Surprising IRS Views With or Without Regulations
  • Joint Ventures—The Practical Applications
  • 2017-13 and New Management Contract Safe Harbors
  • Taxation of Nonprofit Health Care Property: The Value of a (Tax-Free) Dollar
  • Interactive Session on 990/990-T, and many more

The program begins at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, October 18 and ends at 3:15 pm on Friday, October 20.

Program Materials

All materials will be available on a website prior to and after the program and handed out on a flash drive at the program.

All registrants will receive an email a week prior to the program with a link to the materials. This website is for attendees only and is not posted to the public. Cancellation / Substitutions

Cancellations must be received in writing by October 6, 2017. Refunds will not be issued for cancellations received after the cancellation date. Registration fee, minus the $125 administrative fee, will be refunded approximately 3-4 weeks following the program. Note that the registration fee is based on the AHLA membership status of the individual who actually attends the program.

Continuing Education

CLE/MCLE: AHLA will be applying for 14.0 credits (including 1.0 ethics credits) for 60-minute states and approximately 16.8 (including 1.2 ethics credits) credits for 50-minute states. The number of credits approved may vary state to state.

CPE: This seminar will be worth approximately 16.0 CPE credits. AHLA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be addressed to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors, 150 Fourth Avenue North, Suite 700, Nashville, TN 37219-2417. CCB: This education activity has been submitted to the Compliance Certification Board (CCB)® and is currently pending their review for approval of CCB CEUs. We will be applying for 16.8 CCB credits

This program is designed to be an update on developments in the area of tax and tax-exemption in health care. There are no prerequisites or advanced preparations required to register for this group live program. Those seeking accounting credits should be familiar with the basic concepts of law and terminology associated with this area in order to obtain the full educational benefit of this program. Introductory remarks, breaks, luncheons, and receptions are not included in the computation of credit hours. Participants will be given continuing education request forms at the program. Forms must be completed and returned to AHLA staff to receive credit. The sessions, unless otherwise designated, are intermediate to advanced in level. There are no prerequisites required to register for this program.
