The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently issued the following Transmittals modifying the Medicare Claims Processing Manual and the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual:

  • Transmittal 1432 - Medicare Fee for Service Legacy Provider IDs Prohibited on Form CMS-1500 and Form CMS-1450 (UB-04) Claims; Medicare Claims Processing Manual. The effect of this transmittal is that, from and after May 23, 2008, claims submitted to CMS that do not show the provider's or supplier's National Provider Identifier (NPI) number, but instead show a legacy provider number, e.g., a PIN or UPIN, will be returned as unprocessable.
  • Transmittal 1445 - January 2008 Update of the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System Manualization; Medicare Claims Processing Manual. This 68-page transmittal incorporates applicable provisions of the final hospital outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS) rule for 2008 into the Medicare Claims Processing Manual.
  • Transmittal 82 - January 2008 Update of the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System Manualization; Medicare Benefit Policy Manual. This 15-page transmittal incorporates applicable provisions of the final OPPS rule for 2008 into the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual.
