Practice Groups Glossary
Affinity Group – networking opportunity for colleagues who share similar professional interests. An Affinity Group provides targeted benefits and education to a sub-specialty or subset of AHLA members and are sponsored by Practice Groups. There is no cost to join, but one has to be an AHLA member and enrolled in the sponsoring Practice Group to participate. Individuals are encouraged to participate in the activities sponsored by the Affinity Group.
Bootcamp - a sequential series of 5-10 webinars covering related subject matter. Unless otherwise designated, bootcamps offer a comprehensive look at the fundamentals of a given topic or segment of health law. Special discounts are offered to both sponsoring Practice Group members and any individual that registers for all of the webinars in a series as a bundle.
Discussion List – valuable avenue for members to dialogue with one another. Most existing AHLA lists are sponsored by a Practice Group. There is no cost to subscribe, and most lists are open to anyone who wishes to participate.
Educational Call - Affinity Group or Practice Group-led live call featuring one guest speaker on a specific topic followed by Affinity Group/Practice Group business-related discussion. Open exclusively to members of the sponsoring Practice Group at no charge. Educational calls are 30-60 minutes long; materials are optional. No CLE credits are available for participation.
Email Alert – timely update written by Practice Group volunteer(s) that is posted online and distributed via email to members enrolled in the Practice Group.
Executive Summary – up-to-date, sometimes fast-breaking report on a case, issue, or other development in health law written by Practice Group volunteer(s) and distributed electronically to members of the sponsoring Practice Group(s).
Feature Article – each issue of AHLA Connections magazine contains a timely and informative feature article produced by Practice Group volunteers.
Luncheon – all Practice Groups have two in-person networking events during the year in conjunction with a sister program and the Annual Meeting. Most luncheons feature an expert speaker/panel, a question and answer session, and time for networking. Members of the sponsoring Practice Group receive a special discount when they register.
Member Briefing – detailed analysis of a particular issue or noteworthy development in health law written by Practice Group volunteer(s) and distributed electronically to members of the sponsoring Practice Group(s). Serves as a valuable desktop reference for practitioners seeking an indepth understanding of the subject.
Newsletter – provides overview and insight on a variety of new developments. It is an important resource for busy practitioners looking for the high points to help them manage issues relevant to their practice. Newsletters are distributed electronically to members enrolled in the Practice Group.
On Demand – webinar recording that is made available for purchase to be reviewed at the leisure of the purchaser. Speaker contact information is made available for the direction of any pertinent questions and to provide a level of interactivity. On-demand distance-learning events are approved for CLE in eligible states unless otherwise designated.
Roundtable Discussion – interactive, typically 75-minute-long, web-based presentation planned and executed by Affinity Groups and/or Practice Groups. Participants view the speakers’ presentations in real-time. Features expert faculty, and both online and live question-and-answer session. Complimentary to members of sponsoring Practice Group(s); recording/materials are accessible to members of sponsoring Practice Groups at no charge after the event takes place. No CLE credits are available for participation.
Task Force – for those health law topics that cross several Practice Groups, a task force is established to produce substantive resources for the sponsoring Practice Groups’ members (e.g., Accountable Care Organization Task Force). There is no cost to join, but you must be a member of one of the sponsoring Practice Groups to access the Task Force’s site and to receive discounts on registration to Task Force-sponsored webinars.
Toolkit – collection of resources and information on selected healthcare topics, accessible online to members of the sponsoring Practice Group(s).
Tutorial – pre-recorded, brief audio lesson on a topic of interest pertaining to members, featuring faculty with expertise on the selected topic. Sponsoring Practice Group members may access (and download) the recording and support materials on the Practice Group website.
Working Group – a group of volunteers created to address specific projects within the scope of a Practice Group or Task Force.
Webinar – interactive, web-based seminar planned and executed by Practice Groups. Participants view the speakers’ presentations in real-time. Features expert faculty, online and live question-and-answer session, and CLE credits in eligible states. Sponsoring Practice Group members receive a special discount when they register.
