Dennis M. Barry

Dennis Barry is based in Washington, DC. A former partner in King & Spalding’s Healthcare Practice Group until December 2014, his principal area of practice was in the health industry, focusing on health care clients, with an emphasis on Medicare coverage, payment, and compliance issues. At King & Spalding, he headed the health care practice in the Washington, DC, office.  He has represented providers in numerous cases before the Provider Reimbursement Review Board, Administrative Law Judges and the federal courts. He also advised clients on specific compliance questions and worked with providers in establishing compliance programs. He has been involved in defending a number of cases arising under the False Claims Act.

Prior to joining King & Spalding, Mr. Barry was a partner and section head of the Healthcare Industry Group at Vinson & Elkins from 1991-2008. He had previously been with Wood Lucksinger & Epstein where he served as managing partner of the firm’s Washington, DC, office from 1983-1991.  He was regularly included in Best Lawyers for more than two decades.

Mr. Barry is a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) (2005-2011), and a member of AHLA’s Executive Committee from 2008-2011. He served as chair and co-chair of the annual Institute for Medicare and Medicaid Payment Issues from the mid-1990’s to 2004. He is a longtime member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), serving as President of HFMA’s Washington Metro Chapter from 1990-1991.  Mr. Barry was the principal author of Dennis Barry’s Reimbursement Advisor (1989-2014, a monthly newsletter published by Wolters Kluwer), and has been a frequent speaker at programs sponsored by AHLA, HFMA, and other organizations.

Mr. Barry received his BA (Phi Beta Kappa) from Ohio Wesleyan University, and earned his JD from the University of Virginia, School of Law, where he was also an editor of the Virginia Journal of International Law.  He is licensed to practice in the District of Columbia.
