Life Members Network

Back to Communities
What is a Life Member?
A life member is any member of AHLA who has belonged to the Association for 15 years or longer and has been practicing health law for at least 25 years.

Why was the designation established?
In early 2013, the Life Members initiative began in earnest with the creation of a steering committee that identified members’ needs and helped to lay the foundation for establishing this forum.

What will I find in the Life Members Community?
Life Members are automatically enrolled in the online Life Members Community under the larger umbrella of the AHLA Communities at http://communities.healthlawyers.org (which also includes our topical discussion lists and our mentoring program). The Life Members Community is a place to connect with more than 3,000 other longtime AHLA members. When you start a conversation on the community (just like a discussion list), your message will go to each of the members of the community. Similarly, when you respond to someone else's post, you can help start a worthwhile conversation and share your expertise.

For those attending AHLA’s in-person programs, the community provides a mechanism for arranging dinner with other life member colleagues. You are able to ask questions about issues that matter most to you in your practice. Or, you can ask others who have been through a job transition or who might be transitioning from active to a part-time practice, or even retirement, what they did to make it successful. Whatever the scenario, there is sure to be someone among your AHLA colleagues who can help.

Long-time AHLA members contribute to the Association in many ways, including:
  • Supporting AHLA’s Public Interest mission by sharing free Public Interest resources in local communities
  • Mentoring attorneys going through career transitions
  • Submitting a proposal for a Masters level session at a Program (e.g., presentations covering advanced topics in an interactive, roundtable format that assumes a sophisticated level of knowledge on a subject)
  • Visiting area law schools and sharing information about AHLA’s Health Law Curriculum Toolkit with deans and telling students about the benefits of belonging to the Association (student membership is now free!)
  • Recruiting others to join the Association
