Peer Review Hearing Officer Training
Program

Peer review hearings are an essential part of the medical staff
credentialing and disciplinary processes, and the knowledge and skill of
the peer review hearing officer will be pivotal in determining whether
peer review hearings are conducted in an efficient, effective and fair
manner that can withstand judicial scrutiny. The AHLA Peer Review
Hearing
Officer Training Program is designed to educate attendees about:
- HCQIA safe harbor requirements
- the importance of medical staff bylaws
- steps hearing officers need to take to prepare for the hearing
- pre-hearing procedures including discovery and disclosure issues
- effective use of pre-hearing conferences
- selection of hearing officer and hearing panel
- orientation and education of hearing committee members
- burden of proof and evidentiary issues
- distribution of exhibits and other information to the hearing
committee
- the conduct of the hearing including issues such as the role of
attorneys, the unrepresented physician, the order of the proceedings,
sequestration of witnesses, questioning of witnesses, and use of written
statement in lieu of live testimony
- the role of the hearing officer in regulating the hearing, including
ruling on objections and limiting testimony and evidence
- making a proper hearing record
- advising and assisting the hearing committee after the conclusion of
the hearing, including assisting in the preparation of the hearing
committee report and the contents of the report
This program will be of particular interest not only to individuals
who wish to serve as hearing officers, but also to those who represent
parties in peer review hearings, in order to obtain a better
understanding of the practical tools and solutions for dealing with
common issues that arise in connection with peer review hearings.
As part of the materials for the program all attendees will
receive a copy of AHLA's new Peer Review Hearing Guidebook (a
$129 value).
Those attendees who are not current resolvers or hearing officers
with the AHLA ADR Program will be permitted to join the roster free of
charge for a year and include information that they have completed
formal training as peer review hearing officers

CLE Information
Participants will be given continuing education request forms at the
program and must complete and return the form in order to receive
credits. AHLA is an approved sponsor of continuing legal education
credits in most states. This program will be worth approximately 3.0
continuing education credits based on a 60-minute credit hour and 3.6
credits based on a 50-minute hour.

Cancellations/Substitutions
Cancellations must be received in writing by fax or mail no later
than June 20, 2008. Refunds will not be issued for
cancellations received after this date. Registration fees, less a $50
administrative fee will be refunded following the program. Please note
that registration fees are based on the AHLA Membership status of the
individual who actually attends the program. For more information
