Benefits of Membership

  • Sixteen Practice Groups to serve the needs of Health Lawyers' diverse membership. To learn more about Practice Groups—what they do and how you can benefit from enrollment—download this resource that reviews the 2007-2008 projects and activities undertaken by the Association's 16 groups.
  • Health and Life Sciences Law Daily — a daily digest of the most important health and legal news culled from thousands of sources and delivered, as a benefit, to members' email inboxes.
  • Online Health Law Digest, an extensive monthly synopsis of the most current state and federal court decisions in the field of health law with alphabetical and jurisdictional indices.
  • Health Lawyers News, a monthly magazine devoted to health-related legislative and regulatory activity at both state and federal levels. Highlights legal and executive job opportunities in health law; announces speaking and writing opportunities for educational programs and publications; and reports on the professional activities of members. (Student members do not receive this benefit.)
  • Health Lawyers Weekly, a comprehensive online news and analysis service providing in-depth reporting on the latest developments affecting health law. Each Friday, all AHLA members are emailed the latest issue, which includes top news stories, important case law, and federal and state legislative and regulatory developments, as well as regular articles and analyses on issues relevant to your health law practice.
  • Discounts on Publications: Members are entitled to significant discounts on Health Lawyers publications. Our publications cover all the hot topics in health law. Types of publications include:
    • The Cornerstone Series, books written and reviewed by Health Lawyers members who are experts in their respective health law fields. They provide information that is introductory or refresher in nature and are indexed for quick reference. Each book combines background information with the most current details and reference data available. They are designed for the new-to-intermediate lawyer and are a premier source for basic health law information as well as the cornerstone for any health law library.
    • The Expert Series, monographs that offer concise, legal information and analysis for the intermediate and advanced health lawyer on cutting-edge legal issues. Offers practical strategies and potential resolutions to assist even the most sophisticated attorney in advising clients on complicated legal issues.
    • Colloquium Reports, the result of special colloquia held to advance Health Lawyers' public interest mission. Reports are distributed to members, and various constituency groups, including consumer groups and state and federal policy makers.
    • Practice Guide Series, highly acclaimed publications on key areas of health law like the Managed Care Handbook, Hospital-Affiliated Integrated Delivery Systems Handbook and the Peer Review Guidebook.
  • Membership Directory, a comprehensive index of the Association's membership that lets members network with their colleagues from across the country. Downloaded in a compact, encrypted format, this Membership Directory resides directly on your computer desktop. The Directory is easily accessible, giving members instant access whether in the office or on the road visiting clients. Members can choose to receive updated information and revisions on a regular basis—meaning the Directory is never 'out of print.' As an added bonus, members are able to write and save notes within individual records, bookmark selected records, and email another member directly from the Directory. If you've never accessed the Membership Directory before, you'll want to download this Guide. It will provide you with helpful hints on how to download and navigate through this Directory.
  • We have created a user-friendly Website Guide for members to help them utilize the many features, resources, and tools that exist on the Association's website. You can get a refresher on how to log in for the first time; how to register for a program or teleconference; and how to purchase a publication.
  • Career Center, published monthly in the magazine and continuously on the Web site, listing available legal and executive job openings. Members receive a special discount when placing a Position Wanted advertisement.
  • Find a Member quickly—search by last name, firm, city or state to find a member. Locate peers having similar practice areas of interest or who are enrolled in a specific Practice Group.
  • Health Lawyers is an approved sponsor of continuing legal education and continuing professional education credits in most states that require them. We also apply for various other types of professional education credit when appropriate.
  • A "Call for Speakers" for each of Health Lawyers' national programs is published in Health Lawyers News. Members interested in being on the faculty may submit a proposal on a specific topic accompanied by a resume or curriculum vitae.
  • A "Call for Writers" is published in Health Lawyers News. Members interested in writing a book, monograph or analysis of a current health law issue may submit a request on a specific topic accompanied by a resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Written materials as well as audio tapes are available from Health Lawyers programs. Guides to Seminar Materials, a catalogue of the papers presented at each of Health Lawyers' educational programs, are provided to members with information on ordering individual papers or the complete set of course materials.
  • The Alternative Dispute Resolution Service provides experienced mediators, arbitrators, and hearing officers to resolve disputes in the healthcare industry.
