Tax Issues for Healthcare Organizations

Program Description

Whether you are a generalist who needs to know tax issues or a certified tax expert, you will not want to miss the 2009 Tax Issues for Healthcare Oranizations program. The plenary sessions include updates from Steve Grodnitzky from the IRS National Office, Don Spellmann from the Treasury, and Theresa Pattara and Tiffany Smith from the Senate Finance Committee. Session topics will include: 

  • Commercial Activity and Tax-Exempt Status for Healthcare
  • Emerging Property Tax Issues for Non-Profits 
  • Hospital-Physician Economic Relationships – Assessing Fair Market Value and Commercial Reasonableness
  • Physician Practice Acquisitions: A Focus on Legal and Tax Issues

For those who are Form 990 preparers or need an in-depth understanding of it, the program includes a selection of sessions focusing on each of the Schedules of Form 990, including:

  • Executive Compensation (Schedule J)
  • Updating Conflicts Policies and Disclosure Statements Post-990 Reform (Schedule L)
  • Form 990: Practical Issues in Implementation (Schedule H)
  • Revised Form 990 – Reporting and Compliance Pointers Regarding Foreign Activities, including Foreign Investments  (Schedule F)

The program begins Monday, October 12 at 7:00 am for the Tax and Finance Primer and 8:30 am for the General Session, and ends Tuesday, October 13 at 3:25 pm.  

Practice Group Luncheon
The Tax and Finance Practice Group luncheon, sponsored by Grant Thornton, will be held October 12. Please note, there is an additional fee; pre-registration is required; space is limited.

Program Materials
In response to many requests from our members, AHLA is going green for in-person program. We are trying to reduce the amount of paper we use at our programs. This is both an effort at responsible environmental conservation, and an effort to increase the timeliness of the materials provided to our attendees. We will not automatically be printing binders for everyone. All materials will be available on a website prior to the program and handed out on CD at the program. For those who still do want the binder they will be available for an additional fee; please order on the registration form.

CLE/CPE Information

This program will be worth approximately 11.9 credits (including 1.0 ethics credit) for 60-minute states and approximately 14.3 credits (including 1.2 ethics credit) for 50-minute states. Participants will be given CLE Request forms at the program. Forms must be completed and returned to AHLA staff to receive credit. The sessions, unless otherwise designated, are intermediate to advanced in level. There are no prerequisites required to register for this program.

This seminar will be worth approximately 14.0 CPE credits. AHLA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. This program is designed to be an update on developments in the area of tax. There are no prerequisites or advanced preparations required to register for this group live program. Those seeking accounting credits should be familiar with the basic concepts of law and terminology associated with the area of tax in order to obtain the full educational benefit of this program and are required to sign in and out of every session during the program.
