Program Description

The annual Tax Issues for Healthcare Organizations Program will feature representatives from the IRS and leading private practitioners who will address and analyze recent developments and current initiatives.

The program will kick off early Monday morning with the Tax and Finance Practice Group's Tax Primer session for those who are new to the tax heath law area. Following the Primer, there will be an update from the IRS National Office by Marv Friedlander and Stephen Clarke. The morning's general session will also include a panel discussion on the new Form 990 and how it will affect charity care, community benefit, executive compensation, joint ventures and corporate governance. During Tuesday morning's general session, attendees will hear from Cathy Livingston who will give an update on the IRS Chief Counsel followed by Tom Barker from the Department of Health and Human Services who will discuss the exclusion for employer-provided health insurance. A panel discussion focusing on hospital community benefit standards and strategies for navigating the changing landscape will conclude the general session. Attendees will get a more in-depth anaylsis during the breakout session, which will include:

  • Property Tax and Related Expemtion and Valuation Disputes
  • Executive Compensation
  • Corporate Governance
  • Tax-Exempt Bond Issues
  • Joint Ventures
  • RHIO
  • Electronic Health Records
  • Tax Aspects of Clinical Research and Studies

The Tax and Finance Practice Group luncheon, sponsored by Grant Thornton LLP will be held on October 9. There is an additional fee of $38 for members of the Tax Practice Group and $45 for non-members of the Tax Practice Group. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

CLE Information

This program will be worth approximately 14.0 credits (including 1.0 ethics credit) for 60-minute states and approximately 16.8 credits (including 1.2 ethics credit) for 50-minute states. Participants will be given CLE Request forms at the program. Forms must be completed and returned to AHLA staff to receive credit. The sessions, unless otherwise designated, are intermediate to advanced in level. There are no prerequisites required to register for this program.

This seminar will be worth approximately 16.0 CPE credits. AHLA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit.
