Ann N. James is a Senior University Counsel at Stanford University. She is a member of the Stanford University Medical Center legal team, providing counsel primarily to the School of Medicine, but also to its affiliated hospitals and a diverse array of health-related university offices and groups. She holds a BA in Biology from Radford College, a PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from Baylor College of Medicine, and a JD from the University of Houston. Her career focus, both prior to and after her legal education, has been on healthcare. She has conducted research at both Baylor College of Medicine and at the NASA Johnson Space Center in the field of microbiology. James was a partner in and headed the Healthcare Section at Jenkins & Gilchrist, where she had a national practice. As a member of the ABA Health Law Section, she is former Chair of the Transactional and Business Interest Group, and she is a frequent speaker for the section. She has also served as an executive in two women's healthcare companies, and consulted on business issues for a variety of clients. James served on the board of Carondelet Health System, a national Catholic healthcare system, and currently sits on the board of Duke Scientific Inc. in Palo Alto. She has published numerous articles on healthcare law, and has one article and a book on corporate governance issues. She currently serves on the Editorial Board for the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review. Her experience includes academic appointments at the University of Houston Law Center and at Baylor College of Medicine.
