Andrew J. Demetriou is a Partner in the Los Angeles Office of Fulbright & Jaworski, L.L.P., where he serves as the head of the Los Angeles Corporate Practice and a member of the Health Care Practice. His practice focuses on the representation of a wide range of business enterprises, including hospitals, physician organizations and other service providers. His experience includes merger, acquisition and divestiture transactions, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance.
He frequently writes and lectures on mergers and acquisitions, corporate affiliation strategies and governance issues, as well as legal ethics and professional responsibility for state and national organizations, including the American Bar Association, the American Health Lawyers Association, California Continuing Education of the Bar and the Practicing Law Institute. His publications have included a BNA Portfolio on Health Care Integration, articles in the ABA Health Lawyer and eSource on corporate governance and ethics, ALM Corporate Compliance and Regulatory Newsletter, AHLA Handbooks on Managed Care Contracting, the Implications of CareFirst for healthcare organizations, and Member Briefings on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the role of lawyers in corporate compliance programs.
Andy has served in leadership positions in the American Bar Association, and he is a Past Chair of the Health Law Section. He has also been active in the State Bar of California and the Los Angeles County Bar Association, where he served as Chair of the Delegation to the State Bar Conference of Delegates, a member of the Executive Committee of the Barristers and a Director of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation. He is a long-time member of the American Health Lawyers Association (and its predecessor the American Academy of Healthcare Attorneys) and has served on Task Forces for AHLA as well as Chair of its Managed Care SISLC in 1996-97. He is active on other civic boards, including the UCLA Foundation Board of Directors and Board of Governors, the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation, the Board of Visitors for the UCLA Department of Economics and serves as legal counsel to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission in Washington, D.C. He is a Life Fellow of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
Andy is ranked by Chambers & Partners and is listed in the Corporate Law, Mergers and Acquisitions and Healthcare Sections of The Best Lawyers in America and has been recognized as a Southern California Superlawyer. He was named as one of 15 Outstanding Healthcare Transaction Lawyers for 2003 by Nightingale’s Healthcare Law News.
Andy graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1979, and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. He undergraduate degree in Economics was conferred, summa cum laude, at the University of California Los Angeles in 1976.
